William Taylor married Mary Hampshire at St. Peter's Church, Horbury on the 24th January 1802. They had the following children: Ann 1802, Martha 1804, Samuel 1807, Joseph Bilcliff 1810 and Mary 1813. The gravestone states that four children died in infancy. However, I am unable to find a name for one of them. Maybe the child died at birth and so would not have been christened?
It would appear that only their eldest and youngest daughters lived into adulthood. Ann, died in 1852, age 49, Martha died in 1808 and was buried on 22nd April, age 3. Later the same year Samuel died and was buried on 21st November, age 17 months.
I am unable to find a death for Joseph. The 1851 census shows Ann, unmarried living with her younger sister Mary and her husband David Baines on Northgate, Horbury. Ann died the following year age 49.
The inscription reads:
"In memory of Mary, wife of Wm. Taylor who died June 18th 1817 aged 35 years.
Also Wm. Taylor, husband of the above who died May 22nd 1830 aged 49 years.
Also 4 children who died in their infancy.
Also Ann, daughter of the above Wm. and Mary Taylor who died Feb. 4th 1852 aged 49 years."
