John Ellis was baptised at St Peter's on 30th May 1819. He was the son of John, a weaver and Ann. He married Nancy White on the 14th November 1841 at St Helen's Church, Sandal Magna. John was a weaver and Nancy was a servant. Their addresses were both Durkar (or Dirkcar as it is recorded).
In the 1851 census they are living with Nancy's parents, John and Fanny White, at Golden Square, Horbury. John White is described as cloth weaver pauper. John and Nancy have two children, Thomas 5 and Ann 2. By the 1861 census, John and Nancy are living at Northgate, Horbury with their two children.
As we can see from the gravestone, Thomas died later that year aged only 15. The next census of 1871 shows the remaining family members have moved to Leeds and are living at Abbey Mill Yard, Kirkstall. John is a wool sorter and daughter Ann also works in the woollen mill.
During the next ten years something changed for the Ellis family because by the 1881 census they are back in Horbury, living on Storrs Hill (I assume at the bottom end) and are farming 8 acres, and employing 1 man. Unfortunately, this came late in life for John Ellis and he died later in 1881, age 62. Nancy Ellis also died before the next census.
The inscription reads:
"In Memory of Thomas, son of John and Nancy Ellis of Horbury who died September 27th 1861, aged 15 years.
Also the above John Ellis who died October 29th 1881, aged 62 years.
Also the above named Nancy Ellis who died August 17th 1889 aged 78 years."
