John Armitage was baptised at St Peter's Church on the 7th April 1791. He was the son of Edward Armitage. John, a clothier, married Elizabeth Sagar on the 10th May 1809 in the same church. They had children: Ann, Martha, Elizabeth and Ellen.
Their daughter Ann married John Green, a carpenter, on the 9th August 1840, at St Helen's Church, Sandal Magna. Their son Thomas named on the gravestone, was probably born in 1838, two years before his parents married. Their daughter Elizabeth, who was baptised on the 17th November 1844, died on the 29th November the following year.
In the 1841 census Ann and John were then living in Wakefield with son Thomas aged 3 years and daughter Hannah aged 18 months.
The inscription reads:
"In Memory John Armitage, who died December 26th 1838, aged 47 years.
